Recently, I had the pleasure of speaking at the JustFoodERP Customer Connect event in Miami, FL. My main focus at the event was to help educate my peers on the business intelligence and analytics capabilities of the JustFoodERP platform.

I delivered two key sessions at the event, the first being a focus around business intelligence projects and how to reach value. A lot of companies today are struggling with tools and technology when it comes to Business Intelligence and they are getting tired of the product pitches and tool talk.

This is why at Hillstar, we believe business intelligence is more important than any one tool and should be considered an on-going strategy that allows a customer to be as dynamic as their business dictates. This is why it’s critical to focus on people and data first and then technology and tools as an enabling characters in the story of value that is crafted.

With this in mind, I always start my business intelligence sessions and conversations around the three perspectives of data (highlighted in the chart above). These perspectives help categorize questions so companies are better equipped to take intelligent action. Further, this action is then used to help drive towards the nature of the data and the work flow in which a user needs to engage with or be engaged by.

This then leads towards helping create a road-map that can be executed in an agile and iterative fashion. This approach leads to creating a strategy that will help ensure the customer’s business users will have their data drive intelligent action and allow  technical staff to be heroes!

However, this all has to start from a foundation, a critical key to kicking off the never ending stream of value that will flow from a company’s data. This foundation aspect is all about what we call the semantic layer. The semantics of a business and industry are critical in order to correctly understand the stories that come out of a company’s data asset. This is why Hillstar and JustFoodERP work together to generate this semantic layer made up of a data warehouse and analysis cubes.

From this point, the presentation chapter of the story unfolds. Having the foundation in place and understanding what questions and business outcomes are desired will then guide towards the right presentation layer tool for the job. Many customers use Excel, Microsoft Power BI and more.
