The food and beverage industry’s leaders know how to use their business software to stay ahead of traceability and processing standards. In short, the research shows that keeping your software current keeps you compliant.

A recent report by Aberdeen Group revealed that fully 48% of survey respondents listed “ensuring compliance to current and future regulations” among the top two pressures keeping them up at night. Reducing the risk of product recalls was a distant second, though it is closely related to regulatory compliance.

The origins of these pressures are complex. Of course they’re based on a desire not to run afoul of the law or damage one’s reputation, but competitive forces are at play, too. Quality and safety can be competitive differentiators. In some cases, competing in certain markets or retailers means you have to go above and beyond mere regulatory compliance.

One of the keys to achieving that superior level of quality and safety is making the most of the available technology, including business software. The ability to prescribe process standards, make things visible to management and the functionality to directly support quality and safety efforts means there’s a strong correlation between a company’s mastery of its production processes and the capabilities of its  business software (and the people who use it).

When the impact of software choice is so profound — even existential — it pays to study the industry leaders.

Perhaps surprisingly, leading companies tend to be early adopters of new software releases, either upgrading their software promptly or replacing it when they see an opportunity to squeeze more profit from their operations with greater software functionality.

The metrics are striking, as the graph on the right shows.

The message is clear: while having up-to-date business software isn’t a guaranteed recipe for success, it is a necessary ingredient.
